GOVT TELLS INDUSTRIALISTS TO CARE ABOUT, PROTECT WORKPLACE

The Government has told industrialist to value and protect workforce at their industries so as to have sustainable production with efficiency for national development 

Deputy Minister  Prime Minister’s Office ( Labor, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability), Patrobas Katambi made the statement at the weekend when he visited different industries based in Dar es salaam 

The Deputy Minister said among the sixth-phase government’s goals is to enhance economic growth through industrial production where by it makes efforts to create better environment for trade and investment 

“We (government) ensure  that there is better environment for investment as well as ensuring that investment activities adhere to laws including the labour laws, safety and health at workplaces and social security” Mr Katambi stated.

During his visit, Mr Katambi and official from different regulatory agencies and his docket inspected five industries manufacturing different products 

“We have identified several weakness including unfriendly working environment and harassment to workers.Therefore, I call upon employers to offer decent jobs according to the country’s laws and international conventions” he stated 

The deputy Minister welcomed investors who face different challenges in their activities to present them to the government for seeking solution 

On his part, Acting Coastal Zone Manager for Occupational Safety and Health Authority( OSHA), Mr George Chali, highlighted safety challenges, including the lack of safety gears to workers, limited space at workplaces as well as ergonomic issues.

Having identified shortfalls in those industries, the deputy minister directed the responsible government agencies, including OSHA, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), and Workers Compensation Fund (WCF) and Labour department in the ministry to write to the visited industries directing them to make the needed improvements.

The visit to the workplaces by top official from the Prime Minister’s Office are continuous with aim of making follow ups on implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 2003
