Government guarantees safety and health for workers

The Minister of the State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and persons with Disability), Prof. Joyce Ndalichako, has said the government is well placed to ensure the occupational safety and health of all workers in the country, making them free from accidents, diseases, deaths as well as property damages.

Prof. Ndalichako made the statement when she visited the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) Offices in Dar es Salaam for the aim of seeing how the institution under her portfolio was operating only one month and a half from when she was appointed to lead the Ministry.

“It is not the government’s intention to see workers injured at their workplaces. The aim of the government is to prevent all workers against occupational accidents and diseases and this is why there is this institution to deal with these issues which is responsible to raise people’s awareness and according them with all technical advice concerning the subject matter and if this is done effectively the government will get rid of the burden to support victims of occupational accidents and diseases,” said Prof. Ndalichako.

Moreover, she asked support from OSHA staff in the implementation of her responsibilities, urging them to work hard while embracing integrity and professionalism in facilitating other Tanzanian workers to work in a safe environment and increase productivity.

“Being responsible to enforce the Occupational Safety and Health Act. No 5 of 2003 and its respective regulations, you need to perform your duties effectively so as to ensure that every Tanzanian worker is safe and healthier bearing in mind that human health is a core capital in all production activities. Thus, we hope that OSHA will help the government to meet that goal,” stated Prof. Ndalichako.

Speaking about the Minister’s tour, OSHA Chief Executive, Khadija Mwenda, said the visit brought about so many benefits to her organization, noting that it not only enabled the Minister to understand what OSHA was doing but also offered chance for the management and staff to speak about challenges encountered which got answers from the Minister.

“We are lucky today to be visited by our Minister Prof. Joyce Ndalichako who is basically was leading another sector but recently was appointed to lead the Ministry for Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability, thus she came to see how we implement our responsibilities and we had an opportunity to take her through the Occupational Health and Safety Act and our five-year performance report. Furthermore, we had an opportunity to tell her our challenges and we believe she will help us to get solution,” purported OSHA’s Boss.
The Minister’s tour to OSHA offices is a continuation of her recent programme to visit all institutions under the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disability).
