Registering workplaces

As per Section 16 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 5 of 2003, workplace owners or occupiers are required to register their workplaces with OSHA in order to be reached for other OSH services.

OSH inspections

OSHA conducts Occupational Safety and Health inspections at all workplaces in order to ensure availability of appropriate OSH systems for protecting workforce against occupational accidents, diseases and deaths that might be caused by hazardous working environment.

Raising public awareness on OSH matters among stakeholders

Among other responsibilities, OSHA has a role to raise public awareness on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues through OSH training, exhibitions, convocations, Newsletters, brochures, TV and Radio programmes. The purpose of carrying out this duty is to bring common understanding about the subject matter hence giving chance for everybody to participate effectively in  achieving a safe and healthier workforce for sustainable development of our Nation

Medical Surveillance for fitness to work

Medical surveillance for fitness to work performed by medical inspectors from OSHA is implemented in mainly in three stages including before starting job (pre-medical examination), when proceeding with the job (continuous) as well as when one leaves an employer (exit medical checkup). This is done to establish whether an employee is fit for a particular job, monitoring  progress as well as establishing whether an employee has been affected by occupational diseases by the time is exiting from a particular employer.

REQUIREMENT FOR OHS COMPLIANCE

Register with OSHA and get certificate of registration

Conduct Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Risk Assessment at least once annually

Prepare a written OSH Policy

Make sure that necessary statutory OSH inspections have been conducted by authorised inspectors as per OHS Act, 2003

Ensure all workers fitness to work by examining them medically

Make sure Safety and Health Representatives and Safety Aiders of your Workplace has attended an eligible training and rewarded a certificate by OSHA
